President Trump on Monday night officially endorsed Democrat New York City mayoral candidate Andrew Cuomo, urging New Yorkers to vote for the former governor to prevent “Communist” Zohran Mamdani from winning. Trump claimed that if Mamdani were elected, he would withhold federal funding from New York City, calling it an “Economic and Social Disaster.”
Trump’s endorsement came in a post on Truth Social, where he warned that a Mamdani victory would leave the city with “ZERO chance of success, or even survival.” He argued that Cuomo, despite his controversial record, was a better alternative than Mamdani, whom he labeled a “Communist” with no experience. “I would much rather see a Democrat, who has had a Record of Success, WIN, than a Communist with no experience and a Record of COMPLETE AND TOTAL FAILURE,” Trump wrote.
Tech billionaire Elon Musk also endorsed Cuomo for mayor, warning followers on social media that voting for Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa would effectively support Mamdani. Musk stated, “A vote for Curtis is really a vote for Mumdumi or whatever his name is.” His endorsement followed Trump’s earlier remarks in a “60 Minutes” interview, where he suggested backing Cuomo over Mamdani to avoid a “Communist” leader.
Zohran Mamdani responded by highlighting Trump’s endorsement of Cuomo on social media, framing it as evidence of political maneuvering. The mayoral race remained closely contested as voters prepared to cast their ballots.
