As previously reported, former Vice President Dick Cheney passed away at 84. In a statement shared on X, former President George W. Bush paid tribute to Cheney, describing him as an “honorable man” and a “patriot.”

Bush highlighted Cheney’s decades-long career, noting his roles as a White House aide, congressman, Defense secretary, and vice president under Bush from 2001 to 2009. He emphasized Cheney’s influence during critical moments, including the post-9/11 era and U.S. policies in the “war on terror.”

“I asked him to join my ticket in 2000 after first enlisting him to help me find the best running mate,” Bush stated. “In our discussions about the qualities a vice president should have—deep experience, mature judgment, character, and loyalty—I realized Dick Cheney was the one I needed.”

Bush recalled Cheney’s steadfast presence during national challenges, praising his “honest, forthright counsel” and dedication to American security. He concluded by expressing gratitude for Cheney’s service, calling him a “patriot who brought integrity… to every position he held.”

The statement also extended condolences to Cheney’s family, including wife Lynne and daughters.
