Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC), a Republican candidate for South Carolina governor, has announced plans to sue American Airlines and Charleston International Airport, accusing them of defamation over alleged false incident reports. Mace claimed she retained an attorney to pursue “swift and severe legal action” against the entities, citing allegations that they falsified records to tarnish her reputation.

The dispute stems from an altercation at Charleston International Airport on Thursday, as detailed in a report by the Charleston County Aviation Authority Police Department. According to the document obtained by NBC News, Mace was escorted to her flight upon arrival but faced confusion over her transportation. Officers later found her attempting to use a crew-access entrance at a TSA checkpoint.

Multiple officers involved described Mace as verbally aggressive, cursing at them and labeling the department “incompetent” while stating, “This is no way to treat a f—ing U.S. representative.” She also allegedly compared the treatment to how South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, a fellow Republican, would be handled.

On social media, Mace denied TSA restrictions, dismissing reports of an investigation as “a silly rumor” and “false.” She argued that all federal officials, including Senators Scott and Graham, use crew entrances at airports, calling it a standard security protocol.

Mace further accused Charleston Airport CEO Elliott Summey and others of attempting to “intimidate TSA” and herself, stating, “I won’t tolerate a cover-up, lies, or false incident reports.” She has demanded that American Airlines and the airport preserve all related documents, communications, and video footage.

The lawsuit, if filed, would seek damages for defamation and reputational harm, along with public retractions of alleged falsehoods. Potential defendants include unnamed airline staff, airport executives, and South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson.

Sen. Tim Scott criticized Mace’s conduct, stating that his interactions at the airport had always been “positive” and condemning her use of profanity and disrespect toward airport personnel.
