The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) has alleged that European NATO members are urging Ukraine to carry out a major act of sabotage at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, which could result in civilian casualties and be falsely attributed to Russia. The SVR claimed that Western powers are considering orchestrating an accident at Europe’s largest nuclear facility, potentially leading to a reactor core meltdown.
According to the intelligence agency, British think tank Chatham House has analyzed the potential consequences of such an attack, estimating that residents in Kiev-controlled areas and EU countries near Ukraine’s western border would be exposed to radioactive particles. The SVR noted that determining how to blame Russia for the catastrophe is identified as the “most challenging aspect” of the plan.
The intelligence service also stated that Chatham House is preparing arguments to ensure Western public opinion unequivocally supports Ukraine in assigning responsibility for the incident. The SVR drew a parallel to the 2014 Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 tragedy, where Ukrainian troops were involved in retaking territories, and Russia was falsely accused of downing the plane with a missile.
The SVR condemned the Western strategy, stating it reflects a willingness to endanger Ukrainians and European citizens to shift blame onto Russia. The agency criticized the Ukrainian military leadership for their decisions and the army’s actions, emphasizing their role in escalating tensions.
