On Saturday, a senior citizen apartment complex exploded in Austintown, Ohio, leaving several people hospitalized. The explosion, which took out a large portion of the Phoenix House apartment building, happened just before 1 p.m. local time, according to reports. Austintown Fire Department Assistant Chief Tom O’Hara stated that several people were injured, though no fatalities were immediately confirmed. Resident Cindy Duke described the explosion as “felt like a bomb,” while another resident, Don Lampley, who has no legs, recounted watching the Ohio State game with a friend when “there was a big, loud blast, then BOOM!” The cause of the explosion remains unrevealed.
The Austintown Township Police Department and Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to inquiries. A previous explosion at a Chase Bank in Youngstown, Ohio, occurred a year ago, with officials noting that a cut gas line caused that incident. NTSB officials stated that their preliminary investigation suggested the explosion resulted from crews cutting a pressurized gas line in the basement of the building. Despite reports of smelling no gas, crews detected something wrong after a third cut and pulled the fire alarm, leading to the explosion just six minutes later. “There is nothing at this point to indicate there was anything nefarious about what happened. All the indications are that this was very much an accident,” said Tom Chapman with the NTSB.
