New details have emerged about a deadly accident on the Florida Turnpike involving an illegal migrant who made a reckless, unauthorized maneuver while driving a semi-truck. Authorities confirmed that three victims—Haitian immigrants Herby Dufresne, 30, Faniola Joseph, 27, and Rodrigue Dor, 53—were in a minivan when it collided with an 18-wheeler driven by Harjinder Singh, an immigrant from India. The crash occurred on August 12.

Dufresne, who arrived in Miami in December 2023 under a Biden-era program after securing a financial sponsor, was en route to Indiana with Joseph and Dor, who had previously lived in Florida. Dor had relocated to Indiana after struggling to find work in Miami, according to a friend.

Footage from Singh’s truck showed him making a wide U-turn on the turnpike, crossing multiple lanes and colliding with the minivan. The vehicle became wedged under the truck’s trailer. Joseph and Dor were killed at the scene, while Dufresne died later in a hospital after being airlifted.

Singh, who illegally entered California in 2018, was granted a commercial driver’s license despite failing English language proficiency and road sign tests. A Department of Homeland Security statement highlighted that he answered only two of 12 verbal questions correctly and identified just one of four traffic signs during an assessment.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has used the incident to criticize California’s immigration policies, calling for stricter enforcement against undocumented drivers. The state has since implemented measures to inspect truck licenses and reject those issued to unauthorized immigrants. Singh faces vehicular homicide charges and immigration violations.
