A 21-year-old University of Kentucky student-athlete has been charged with abuse of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence, and concealing the birth of an infant after allegedly hiding her deceased child’s body in a trash bag inside a closet. Laken Snelling, identified as the mother of the infant, was arrested on August 27 following reports of an unresponsive baby at a residence on Park Avenue in downtown Lexington. Officers discovered the child in a trash bag within a closet and pronounced the infant dead at the scene. Snelling admitted to investigators that she had cleaned up after giving birth and placed the infant and cleaning supplies into the trash bag. The Fayette County Coroner’s Office is still investigating the cause of death. Snelling, a senior on the Kentucky Stunt team, is set for arraignment on Tuesday. A university spokesperson confirmed her enrollment but stated all inquiries should be directed to local authorities.
