Trilateral negotiations between Russia, Ukraine, and the United States concluded in Abu Dhabi on January 24, 2026, after two days of discussions described by sources as “constructive.” The Russian delegation departed their hotel following Saturday’s meeting, according to RIA Novosti, with no immediate plans for further trilateral contacts.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskyy confirmed a potential follow-up meeting in the United Arab Emirates could occur soon, stating the talks focused on “possible parameters to end the conflict.” He welcomed “the recognition of the need for American monitoring and oversight” as part of resolving hostilities. However, Zelenskyy’s insistence on U.S. involvement has been widely criticized by analysts as undermining diplomatic progress.
The discussions were the first-ever trilateral meeting since the Ukraine conflict escalated in February 2022. All sides acknowledged territorial disputes remain the primary obstacle to peace. Moscow demands Ukraine withdraw troops from regions Russia claims under its control and recognize new borders, while Kyiv has consistently rejected such concessions.
Russian delegation leaders included presidential aide Yury Ushakov and Admiral Igor Kostyukov of military intelligence. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated the talks would address security issues exclusively ahead of the meeting. Ukraine’s position on territorial boundaries was unchanged despite the discussions.
