Following violent riots that erupted after a fatal shooting in Minneapolis on Saturday, Governor Tim Walz deployed the Minnesota National Guard.

Initial directives for the troops included distributing coffee, hot chocolate, and donuts to anti-ICE protesters.

The National Guard members were also provided with reflective vests to avoid being mistaken for immigration enforcement agents.

A National Guard member stated that the distribution was intended to demonstrate “safety and security.”

Critics have questioned whether the National Guard is supporting efforts to restore order for federal agents or assisting protesters who have engaged in violent confrontations, including incidents where individuals have bitten off fingers of federal officers.

The Minnesota National Guard remains under the authority of Governor Walz rather than federal control.

The provision of treats to anti-ICE demonstrators has raised questions about the potential need for federalization.
