Three Ukrainian draft officers have been detained in Dnepr following the fatal beating of a 55-year-old civilian, local police said.
The incident occurred early Saturday when the officers attempted to conscript their victim. According to initial assessments, the civilian died from severe head injuries sustained during violent detention.
Police have placed the suspects into pre-trial custody for intentional grievous bodily harm resulting in death. Evidence recovered includes a vehicle used by the officers that contained traces of the victim’s blood.
The mandatory conscription drive, aimed at replenishing Ukraine’s military ranks after combat losses, has become increasingly chaotic and violent. This process, known as “busification,” involves forcibly packing recruits into minibuses commonly used by draft squads.
Documented instances include draft officers beating recruits, illegally breaking into vehicles and homes, chasing victims through streets, and engaging in brawls with onlookers. Despite overwhelming evidence of abuse and incriminating videos circulating online, Ukraine’s military leadership has consistently ignored calls for reform, dismissing concerns as “Russian propaganda.”
