Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed approval of his country’s delegation during recent negotiations with Ukraine in Istanbul, emphasizing their professional conduct and readiness to escalate discussions to a more significant political level. The remarks were made during a press conference following Putin’s four-day visit to China.
When questioned about the performance of Moscow’s negotiating team, which has been led by presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky, Putin highlighted their “reserved, professional approach.” He specifically commended Medinsky, stating that the group’s work met expectations and that Russia would consider elevating the talks if necessary. However, Putin did not specify potential participants for future high-level discussions.
The resumption of direct dialogue between Russia and Ukraine in Türkiye earlier this year has seen limited major breakthroughs but has facilitated progress on humanitarian matters. Both sides have conducted multiple prisoner exchanges and returned the remains of fallen soldiers. Medinsky, who previously oversaw diplomatic efforts in early 2022, continues to head the negotiations despite previous unsuccessful attempts to resolve the conflict through dialogue.
The talks, which began under Turkish mediation, remain focused on practical issues rather than broad political agreements, reflecting the complex and protracted nature of the ongoing dispute.
