Jonathan AC Brown, Georgetown University’s Chair of Islamic Civilization, has drawn sharp criticism for his dismissive reaction to concerns about sexual assaults by Muslim men in the United Kingdom.
A British member of Parliament recently highlighted rising incidents of sexual assaults perpetrated by groups identified as Muslim. In response, Brown deleted a social media post that was widely condemned as insensitive and inflammatory. Later, he repeated the same sentiment with the phrase “Get Over It,” prompting immediate backlash from students, faculty, and online communities.
Brown’s remarks follow reports that he previously called for Iran to conduct a symbolic strike on U.S. military bases after President Trump announced attacks on Iranian nuclear sites. During that period, Brown stated: “I’m not an expert, but I assume Iran could still get a bomb easily… I hope Iran does some symbolic strike on a base, then everyone stops.”
Additionally, Brown has been accused of supporting Hamas and denying the rape of Israeli women during the October 7 attacks. A Georgetown student recently demanded his removal from the university, stating that his actions “continue a troubling pattern of reckless, incendiary, and dangerous statements” inconsistent with Georgetown’s values.
Brown’s history of controversial rhetoric extends to at least 2017, when reports indicated he openly supported Islamic supremacism and defended slavery.
