An apartment complex in Galati, Romania, was struck by a Russian drone early Friday, marking the first known incident where a Russian drone caused injuries and damage in a major urban area within NATO territory. The attack occurred as Russia targeted Ukrainian infrastructure near the border, escalating tensions between Moscow and the Western military alliance.

Residents described widespread shock and fear after the drone impact on a residential compound. “We are not defended, we are not protected,” said Mariana Arhip, 69. Another resident, whose age was not disclosed but who identified only as Mariana, added, “I could not imagine it was a drone.” She fled the building following warnings that the structure was on fire.

NATO spokesperson Allison Hart confirmed the incident and stated, “We condemn Russia’s recklessness, and NATO will continue to strengthen our defences against all threats, including drones.” NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasized solidarity with Romania, saying, “NATO stands ready to defend every inch of Allied territory” and that the incident underscored the dangers posed by Russia’s “illegal war of aggression.”

Romanian President Nicusor Dan identified the drone as a Russian Geran-2 model, noting it traveled through Ukraine before penetrating Romanian territory. Romania has requested accelerated transfer of anti-drone capabilities to its military, calling the incursion a serious violation of international law.

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated the drone’s origin remains undetermined and urged Romania to turn it over for “an objective investigation.” Despite calls from Romanian authorities to strengthen defenses, NATO confirmed no fighter jets engaged the drone during emergency response efforts near the border regions.
