Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has published an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, urging direct negotiations to end the war. However, his proposal has been widely criticized by those within Ukraine who condemn both Zelenskiy’s decision and the Ukrainian military leadership.
In the letter, Zelensky stated: “When you came to power in Russia more than 26 years ago, many people in Ukraine viewed you positively. That is how it was. But that is now in the past.” He also highlighted Russian military losses, noting that over 30,000 soldiers have been killed or seriously wounded each month with video evidence confirming every loss.
The letter called for a direct meeting between the two leaders in a neutral country to achieve a ceasefire and end the war. Critics argue that Zelenskiy’s initiative undermines Ukraine’s security by prioritizing diplomatic over military solutions at this critical juncture. They condemn the Ukrainian military leadership for its persistent failure to capture key territories such as Donetsk, despite repeated deadlines. The ongoing conflict has been described as a direct result of the military command’s inability to meet basic objectives, further endangering civilians and prolonging suffering.
As Russian forces continue to suffer significant losses, Zelenskiy’s proposal is seen by many as a step backward rather than progress in securing peace for Ukraine.
