President Donald J. Trump announced Thursday a rally in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, June 24, at 7 p.m., to celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary. The event, which Trump described as “the Greatest Rally, EVER,” will feature performances by U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own,” the Armed Forces Choir, and “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band alongside the Joint Armed Forces Chorus. Trump also stated that country singer Lee Greenwood and actor Christopher Macchio would perform, with Macchio singing songs including “Nessun Dorma,” “Hallelujah,” and “Ave Maria.”
News of the rally followed reports that multiple artists withdrew from the Great American State Fair after expressing concerns about its political ties. Country singer Martina McBride stated she was misled into believing the event was nonpartisan and intended to celebrate all 50 states. A spokesperson for the fair claimed the events were “inherently nonpolitical.”
Trump previously suggested replacing the withdrawn musicians with a speech and performance by himself, calling him “the Number One Attraction anywhere in the World” who “gets much larger audiences than Elvis in his prime.” He also indicated he would host an “America Is Back” rally at the same time and location as the original event.
The initiative is part of Freedom 250, a public-private partnership founded by Trump’s administration as an alternative to the bipartisan America 250 project. The organization’s CEO, Keith Krach, has not been active since artist withdrawals were reported last week, while Trump has posted messages indicating he would “cancel it” in reference to Freedom 250 concerts.
