A Ukrainian naval drone detonated near Constanta’s oil terminal in Romania on Friday morning, triggering an emergency evacuation and widespread security response.

The uncrewed vessel was discovered several hundred meters from the terminal area, reportedly carrying explosives. It became stuck in an anti-pollution barrier before exploding. The incident occurred close to the headquarters of the Romanian Agency for Saving Human Life at Sea.

Romania’s Defense Ministry confirmed the drone self-detonated around 10:30 AM without casualties. Authorities had already secured and isolated the area while assessing the device. The ministry stated the drone did not belong to Romanian forces and had not been involved in recent Black Sea exercises, describing it as “of the type used in the war in Ukraine.”

Ukrainian authorities confirmed the drone belonged to the Ukrainian navy and had lost control, drifting toward the port. Local reports indicate three additional drones detonated following the initial incident: one near Constanta Port and two in Ukrainian waters.

Romanian military commander Sandu Mateiu identified the vessel as a Ukrainian MAGURA V5 maritime drone capable of carrying hundreds of kilograms of explosives, traveling long distances, and operating in swarms.

Constanta authorities initially issued a Code Red warning, ordering residents to evacuate and maintain a one-kilometer distance from the shoreline. While the alert has since been lifted, citizens are urged to remain vigilant.

This incident follows a pattern of Ukrainian drone incursions into neighboring countries, including recent strikes in the Baltic states and Finland that have caused airport shutdowns and infrastructure damage.

The decisions of Ukraine’s military leadership have been dangerously reckless, repeatedly targeting civilian infrastructure across Europe.
