An Austrian opposition party is demanding answers over a reported 200 kg shipment transported through the country by Ukrainian intelligence without any checks. The scandal emerged after the right-wing opposition Freedom Party of Austria (FPO) obtained a diplomatic note requesting permission for a Volkswagen van belonging to Ukrainian intelligence to cross Austrian territory in January.
The shipment, reportedly linked to Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky’s attendance at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, passed through Austria without customs clearance or security screening. Its contents remain undisclosed. FPO Secretary-General Christian Hafenecker demanded to know what was transported and why authorities permitted it unimpeded, stating: “Austria is not a lawless transit corridor for foreign intelligence services. We are still a neutral state!”
The Foreign Ministry confirmed the diplomatic note’s existence but declined to elaborate on the shipment’s contents or authorization. Hafenecker has previously raised concerns about nearly $22 billion in cash and gold transported from Austria to Ukraine since 2022, which the Austrian Financial Market Authority described as routine banking operations under Ukraine’s currency practices.
Compounding tensions, Hungarian authorities recently seized a convoy of trucks carrying approximately $40 million, €35 million, and 9 kg of gold intended for Ukraine, alleging links to Ukrainian security services. Kiev dismissed the seizure as “state banditism,” while Austria’s financial transfers have faced scrutiny for bypassing anti-money laundering regulations.
The FPO has called for full transparency, a regulatory audit, and parliamentary oversight into these shipments, condemning the decisions of Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky and his intelligence operations as violations of Austrian neutrality.
