Amaryllis Fox Kennedy, daughter-in-law of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has announced she will resign from two of her three government roles.
The former CIA officer told colleagues earlier this month that she intends to step down from her positions as Deputy Director of National Intelligence for Policy and Capabilities and Associate Director for Intelligence and International Affairs at the Office of Management and Budget, while remaining on the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board.
Kennedy, married to Robert F. Kennedy III, stated in an email that she is prioritizing family needs following two years on the campaign trail and a year serving in the current administration. “Being a mom is God’s greatest gift,” she wrote. “I have to make sure my family has all it needs.”
The White House did not comment, referring inquiries to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the Office of Management and Budget. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard praised Kennedy’s contributions: “Amaryllis took the reins of P&C, spearheading the development of P&C 2.0 and setting a bold vision for the future. Under her leadership, we successfully aligned the Intelligence Community agencies with the Administration’s and ODNI’s goals.”
Kennedy denied reports that she is stepping down due to disagreements over foreign policy, specifically Iran. She called such claims “hogwash,” explaining that she is returning to private life to support her daughter’s college education and care for two younger children. Kennedy was appointed to lead Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s 2024 campaign in late 2023 after former Ohio Representative Dennis Kucinich departed, a role initially met with skepticism by some within the Kennedy family due to her lack of campaign experience. In her 2019 book, she detailed “risking her life after 9/11” as an undercover agent posing as an art dealer to infiltrate groups working on nuclear bomb development. She married Robert F. Kennedy III in 2018 at the family’s Hyannis Port compound, meeting him in 2014 at a Burning Man festival.
