French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte Macron have filed a lawsuit against right-wing podcaster Candace Owens, alleging she has been spreading a viral conspiracy theory claiming Brigitte was born male and has been deceiving the public for years.

The legal action follows claims by Owens that Brigitte Macron was born as a man named Jean-Michel Trogneux—her brother. In March 2024, Owens stated on social media she would “stake [her] entire professional reputation on the fact that Brigitte Macron is in fact a man.”

According to their lawyer Tom Clare, the couple plans to present scientific evidence in court to prove Brigitte’s biological sex. One potential piece of evidence may be photographs of her pregnant and raising children. The Macrons have described Owens’ conspiracy theories as part of a “campaign of global humiliation.”
