Law enforcement officials have identified Benjamin Erickson, a 24-year-old man from West Bend, Wisconsin, as the person of interest in the tragic mass shooting at Brown University.

Erickson was detained early Sunday morning by authorities at a hotel in Coventry, Rhode Island, approximately 15 miles southwest of the university’s campus. The incident occurred on Saturday during a final-exam study session when Erickson fired more than 40 rounds from a handgun.

Military records indicate that Erickson served as an infantryman in the U.S. Army from May 2021 to November 2024, leaving with the rank of specialist and no deployments. Public records show he previously lived in Washington, D.C.

Investigators discovered a revolver equipped with a laser light in Erickson’s hotel room, which aided law enforcement in tracking his location through cellphone geolocation data. Authorities are also investigating Erickson for potential long-term mental health issues and any possible connection to Brown University.

No official photographs of the suspect have been released by authorities.
