A congressional staffer for Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) died after setting herself on fire with gasoline at her Uvalde home, according to investigators.

Regina Santos-Aviles, 35, was discovered alive but burning by her mother on September 13 and airlifted to a hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. Authorities stated no foul play is suspected, though her family maintains the incident was an accident.

Firefighters arrived at the scene after being alerted around 9:30 p.m., finding Santos-Aviles engulfed in flames. Burning gasoline cans were extinguished upon their arrival. The Uvalde Police Department confirmed no other individuals are under suspicion for her death.

Santos-Aviles’s mother, Nora Ann Gonzales, described the event as a tragic accident, recounting that her daughter’s final words were “I don’t want to die.” Fire department chief Mario Rangel noted the residence had been partially extinguished with a fire extinguisher before emergency responders arrived.

Congressman Gonzales released a statement honoring Santos-Aviles, calling her a dedicated professional who sought to improve her community. She died the following day at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio.

Emergency services were notified of the incident at 9:30 p.m., with firefighters responding to a separate call about an “individual on fire” shortly afterward. The initial alert was canceled, but responders proceeded to the location due to its proximity to the station.
