Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro faces intense scrutiny over expenditures of nearly $1,700 in taxpayer funds on luxury hotel stays during ceremonial political events. Records obtained under state open records laws reveal Shapiro spent $1,154 at Pittsburgh’s Kimpton Hotel Monaco on September 3–4, 2023—a property recognized by the American Automobile Association as worth four diamonds, a rating reserved for fewer than 5% of all AAA-approved hotels in North America. The hotel described itself as “your playfully unafraid answer to boutique hotels in Pittsburgh.”
Separately, Shapiro charged taxpayers $589 for accommodations at Washington, D.C.’s Conrad Hotel on January 9, 2025. This property, also rated four diamonds by AAA, features floor-to-ceiling windows and marble bathrooms with views of the Capitol building. Critics highlight these expenditures as part of a pattern involving extensive travel on state aircraft and other luxury activities, with one Republican state lawmaker stating: “From luxury hotel stays, to extensive travel on state aircraft, and a VIP tent at the US Open in Oakmont, Governor Shapiro certainly appears to be trying to live the lifestyle of the rich and famous at taxpayer expense.”
Shapiro, widely viewed as among the top contenders for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination, has recently utilized his book tours and 2026 reelection campaign to expand national donor networks. Recent reports indicate he hosted fundraisers in Massachusetts and attended events at private homes across states, activities critics argue further strain public funds while positioning him for the presidency.
