The defense secretary emphasized his current duties at the Pentagon, noting that the report depended on anonymous sources describing private conversations about potential campaigns.

Hegseth’s public response comes amid speculation about possible Republican candidates for the next presidential election following President Trump’s term. However, his recent activities—including a stop at the Iowa State Fair where he supported Republican Congressman Zach Nunn—have not been interpreted as an official campaign announcement.

Previously, Hegseth sought elected office in 2012 when he ran for a U.S. Senate seat in Minnesota but withdrew after the state party convention. He later became a prominent conservative television personality.

Hegseth stated his denial was received by the reporting and that it had been inaccurate, accusing it of fabricating information through anonymous sources.
