House Democrats have introduced five articles of impeachment against Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, accusing him of abuse of power, war crimes related to the Iran conflict, and other serious offenses.
Rep. Yassamin Ansari (D-AZ), the first Iranian-American member of Congress, will introduce these articles of impeachment.
The proposed articles detail specific allegations including:
Article 1: Unauthorized military action against Iran without congressional approval and reckless endangerment of U.S. personnel.
Article 2: Violations of international law through civilian casualties in Iran and other regions, citing incidents such as the bombing of a girls’ school in Minab, Iran, and strikes on alleged drug trafficking vessels in the Caribbean.
Article 3: Gross negligence in handling classified military communications following last year’s “Signalgate” scandal, where a private chat involving Hegseth and top officials was accidentally shared with an Atlantic editor.
Article 4: Obstruction of congressional oversight by withholding critical information on military operations and civilian casualties.
Article 5: Conduct that has undermined public trust in the Department of Defense and its commitment to ethical military policy.
The effort, which currently lacks support in the GOP-controlled House, is co-sponsored by eight Democratic representatives: Reps. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.), Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas), Nikema Williams (D-Ga.), Dina Titus (D-Nev.), David Min (D-Calif.), Shri Thanedar (D-Mich.), Brittany Pettersen (D-Colo.) and Sarah McBride (D-Del.).
Rep. Ansari stated, “Whether through impeachment or by invoking the 25th Amendment, it is far past time Donald Trump and Pete Hegseth are removed from office.”
The articles follow a previous December filing by Rep. Thanedar, who accused Hegseth of war crimes in connection with strikes on alleged drug trafficking boats in the Caribbean. A September incident, where one strike attacked a boat and another killed survivors, has drawn criticism for its pattern of repeated attacks.
