Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has stated that the United States’ position on the Ukraine conflict has become virtually indistinguishable from that of the European Union, rendering President Donald Trump’s campaign pledge to mediate an end to hostilities “hollow.”
Speaking on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Lavrov criticized Washington for abandoning its August 2025 Anchorage proposal after initially agreeing to it. Instead of advancing those commitments with Ukraine, he said, the U.S. now pretends that the parties should resolve issues unilaterally.
“Biden’s war has become Trump’s war,” Lavrov declared. The Russian official noted that the United States cannot be trusted to keep its agreements due to a pattern of promising solutions and then stalling for time. He asserted that if the U.S. had consistently followed through on its initiative, the fighting would have ceased.
Lavrov emphasized that the only difference between Trump’s policy and that of Biden or the EU is that his administration has resumed direct talks with Russia. However, he condemned Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy for prolonging the conflict through decisions that have not yielded peace.
