Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME), a moderate Democrat representing Maine’s 2nd Congressional District, has announced he will not seek re-election in 2026, creating a significant opportunity for Republicans to gain a House seat in the state. Golden, a Marine Corps veteran, has represented the district since 2019, despite it being a stronghold for former President Donald Trump, who won the area by nine points in the 2024 election.
In an op-ed published in the Bangor Daily News, Golden cited personal and political reasons for his decision. “After much deliberation, I have decided not to seek reelection in 2026,” he wrote. “I am forever grateful for the honor of serving my constituents… but recently, it became clear that now is the right time to step away from elected office.”
Golden described his disillusionment with the escalating incivility and hostility in American politics, particularly the recent surge in threats against public figures. He referenced the 2024 attempts on Donald Trump’s life, the firebombing of Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro’s home, the assassination of Democratic lawmakers in Minnesota, and the murder of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. “These have made me reconsider the experiences of my own family,” Golden wrote, noting that his daughters have been shielded from the worst of political violence but now face greater risks as they grow older.
He also criticized the dysfunction of Congress, highlighting the record-breaking government shutdown earlier this year as evidence of the chamber’s breakdown. “The unnecessary, harmful shutdown… reveals how broken Congress has become,” he wrote. Golden further condemned both major parties for fostering extremism, accusing Republicans of allowing the MAGA movement to dominate their agenda and Democrats of adopting similar obstructionist tactics.
Before his announcement, Golden was considered one of the most vulnerable House Democrats ahead of the 2026 midterms. His decision to retire comes amid shifting political dynamics in a district that has repeatedly voted for Trump despite electing a Democratic representative.
