A Helena city commissioner candidate accused of leaving a threatening voicemail for U.S. Senator Tim Sheehy has been identified as Haley McKnight, according to multiple reports. The incident occurred in July after Sheehy supported the passage of the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” a tax and spending measure that drew sharp criticism from progressive groups.
McKnight’s voicemail, obtained by Fox News Digital, included explicit language targeting Sheehy. “I hope that one day you get pancreatic cancer and it spreads throughout your body so fast that they can’t even treat you for it,” she said in the message. The recording also contained personal attacks on Sheehy’s fertility and family, with McKnight vowing to confront him “on the streets” if given the chance.
Sheehy’s office confirmed receiving the voicemail on July 1, noting that McKnight referenced the senator’s role in advancing the GOP-backed reconciliation bill, which included Medicaid reforms. The message was reportedly left at 1:10 p.m. MT that day.
McKnight, a progressive small business owner and president of Helena Young Professionals, is running for a seat on the Helena City Commission. She moved to Montana in 2017 after serving as an AmeriCorps Vista member in Butte.
The voicemail has sparked controversy, with critics condemning the language used while others defended McKnight’s right to express her views. No further details about potential consequences for McKnight have been disclosed.
