Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is expected to announce her retirement from Congress following Tuesday’s elections. California voters will consider “Proposition 50,” a plan to redraw the state’s congressional districts, which has been linked to efforts by Democrats to secure additional House seats before the midterm elections.
Multiple Democratic sources in her home state and Congress suggest that the 85-year-old California Democrat may choose not to seek re-election in 2026 after nearly four decades representing her San Francisco-based district. A House Democrat from California expressed admiration for Pelosi, stating, “I think she’s out. She’s going to go out with Prop 50 overwhelmingly passing, and what a crowning achievement for her to do that.”
Her departure, if confirmed, would mark the end of an era in Congress, where her legislative expertise and fundraising prowess helped make her the first woman to lead the House. It would also intensify competition for her influential seat.
Pelosi has not publicly challenged two Democrats vying for her district’s primary, despite raising over $2 million this election cycle and maintaining a $1.5 million campaign war chest. The potential rivals, state Sen. Scott Wiener and wealthy former tech executive Saikat Chakrabarti, previously served as chief of staff to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Wiener announced his congressional bid, vowing to “fight Trump’s takeover” and champion values such as housing, healthcare, and clean energy. A House Democratic leadership aide noted, “I think she’s preparing to exit the stage.”
After losing her speaker’s gavel in 2024, Pelosi reportedly pressured a president to abandon his re-election campaign. A White House official acknowledged the leader’s “ruthless” decision to oppose him.
A spokesman for Pelosi declined to confirm whether she would seek re-election to a 20th term, stating her focus remains on winning “Yes on 50” in California. He urged Californians to support the effort to reclaim the House for Democrats.
