Videos circulating on social media depict National Guard members collecting trash and undertaking restoration projects in Washington, D.C., as part of an initiative linked to the Trump administration’s efforts to address urban decay.
The D.C. National Guard shared footage showcasing troops hauling garbage bags near a waterfront trail, with one member describing the work as part of broader “beautification and restoration” efforts. A participant from Southeast D.C. expressed optimism, stating, “I feel like D.C. really needed this, and I feel like it’s only going to get better.”
Local business owners reported improved safety perceptions following the deployment of federal agents and National Guard personnel. Indu Bhatia, a liquor store owner near the White House, noted that her employees and customers felt “much more safe” since the increased presence. She highlighted longstanding security challenges, including repeated robberies, but credited the shift in law enforcement strategy.
Washington, D.C., has historically grappled with high violence rates, though recent data shows mixed trends in crime statistics. The National Guard’s involvement underscores a broader focus on urban revitalization and public safety under the administration’s policies.
