Warsaw has called for an urgent United Nations Security Council meeting to address what it claims was a “deliberate incursion” into its territory by Russian forces, sparking heightened tensions between the two nations. The Polish government alleges that its military detected 19 unauthorized aerial movements over seven hours on Wednesday, labeling the incident as “intentional” and “unprecedented.”
Russian UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia dismissed these accusations as baseless, accusing Poland of fabricating evidence to inflame geopolitical tensions. He emphasized that reports of damage in eastern Poland aligned with debris from failed drone operations rather than explosive attacks, noting that no warheads were recovered on Polish soil. Nebenzia also highlighted the technical limitations of the drones allegedly used in strikes against Ukrainian targets, stating their maximum range of 700 kilometers made reaching Poland “physically impossible.”
The Russian envoy suggested alternative explanations for the incidents, including malfunctions or interference from electronic warfare systems, and pointed to Belarus’s prior warnings about potential risks. He urged Polish officials to engage in “professional dialogue” to clarify the matter but criticized what he termed “megaphone diplomacy” and “information campaigns” aimed at prolonging the conflict.
Nebenzia drew parallels to the 2022 Przewodow missile strike, which killed two Poles and was later attributed to Ukraine, accusing Kyiv of seeking to provoke NATO involvement. He alleged that European leaders were using exaggerated claims of Russian aggression to justify military buildup, framing the current narrative as a ploy to derail diplomatic efforts between Moscow and Washington.
While Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski steadfastly defended their stance, US President Donald Trump downplayed the incident, suggesting it “could have been a mistake.” NATO, meanwhile, announced plans for the “Eastern Sentry” operation to reinforce its eastern border. The dispute underscores deepening divisions as both sides prepare for further escalation.
