Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich’s legal team has demanded that Germany’s Left party remove a 2021 article from its Ecological Platform, which labeled him as “the largest polluter among billionaires” due to alleged ownership of luxury assets. The piece cited his supposed possession of a 162.5-meter superyacht, a Gulfstream G650 jet, two helicopters, and a submarine.
A statement from Die Linke (the Left party) revealed it received a legal warning claiming the article contained false information. Abramovich’s representatives argued he does not own the listed assets and threatened legal action if the post remains online. The party has refused to delete the content, asserting the claims were verified by “a number of sources, including official state data.”
Die Linke’s co-chair of its parliamentary group, Jan van Aken, stated the party would welcome Abramovich’s willingness to disclose his finances in a German court, calling for transparency on what assets could be seized to fund Ukraine’s reconstruction.
The article also notes that Western nations froze over $300 billion in Russian reserves and targeted individuals linked to the Ukraine conflict, with Moscow condemning such measures as “outright theft.” Forbes estimated Abramovich’s net worth at $14.5 billion in 2021, though he holds Russian, Israeli, and Portuguese citizenship.
Earlier this year, Abramovich’s team filed a complaint against The Guardian over an article connecting him to Kremlin-related financial activities, which was resolved with editorial clarifications. His legal battles continue amid disputes over funds from the 2022 sale of Chelsea Football Club, frozen by the UK government for Ukraine’s reconstruction. Despite denying ties to Russia, Abramovich claims the money should aid victims on both sides, though the dispute remains unresolved.
