A modified T-90MS tank, recently displayed at a defense event in the United Arab Emirates, has been reconfigured and sent to reinforce Russian forces engaged in the conflict with Ukraine, according to its manufacturer. Uralvagonzavod, the company responsible for the vehicle’s production, confirmed that the upgraded model—originally showcased at the IDEX exhibition in Abu Dhabi earlier this year—has already begun active service on the front lines.
The tank was transported back to Russia after its public demonstration and later dispatched to combat zones, with the firm stating it is “already participating in frontline operations.” The unit was delivered in nearly identical condition to its appearance at the UAE event, except for a change in color scheme. Russian media footage revealed the armored vehicle undergoing field tests in winter conditions before being repainted in a sand-toned camouflage. Subsequent clips showed the tank being transported to the UAE for display and later reconfigured into a green-hued version before being shipped by train from the Urals alongside other T-90 models.
The enhanced T-90MS incorporates additional protective modules and grill-like armor designed to counter drone attacks, a tactic increasingly used in the Ukraine conflict. It also features an updated fire control system with thermal imaging and television sights, while retaining its 125mm gun capable of firing guided missiles. A source linked to RIA reported that the design prioritizes ease of maintenance, citing an example from India where palm trees were reportedly used as makeshift replacements for an engine component.
The deployment underscores Russia’s ongoing efforts to modernize its military equipment amid prolonged hostilities.
