A son accused of fatally stabbing his Grammy-nominated opera singer father at their Santa Monica home has made his first court appearance following the incident.

Micah Sykes, 31, appeared before Judge Theresa McGonigle on Thursday after allegedly murdering Jubilant Sykes, 71. Police responded to a 911 call from Cecelia Sykes, who witnessed her husband’s death at their home.

During the hearing, Micah Sykes interrupted proceedings and stated: “I don’t see my mother here… this person is not telling the truth whatsoever.” A protective order was issued by the judge prohibiting contact between Micah and his mother.

According to court records, Micah Sykes has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and was reportedly supposed to be under medication at the time of the murder. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, including whether he was under-medicated or not.

Jubilant Sykes, a famed baritone, died after being found mortally wounded on the floor by police.
