ESPN host Stephen A. Smith, who has hinted at a potential run for president in the 2028 election, stated that Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) could transform him into a committed Republican. “I ain’t no d— Republican,” Smith said, according to Fox News. “But that mean if anybody could make me one, it would be him. I’m just going to keep it a buck.”
Smith praised Donalds as “the real deal,” noting his consistent battles with Democrats and other opponents across platforms. “He ain’t backing up. He knows his stuff. OK? I talk to him all the time. All the time.” A Donalds campaign official confirmed their friendship, stating the candidate is attracting voters through a focus on affordability and public safety.
The James Madison Institute poll released August 6 showed Donalds leading likely Republican primary voters at 49%, significantly ahead of Lt. Gov. Jay Collins. Campaign communications director Gates McGavick emphasized Donalds’ appeal: “Byron Donalds is drawing support from Floridians of all backgrounds because he has a clear vision to make Florida more affordable, keep Floridians safe and make sure the radical left stays out of the Sunshine State.”
Smith also addressed his 2028 presidential ambitions, identifying Marco Rubio as his sole concern: “The only candidate I would be worried about is Marco Rubio. Because I think he’s an adult in the room with impeccable credentials.” Smith reiterated confidence in his debate skills but confirmed no final decision has been made on his political future.
