Reports indicated that the Trump administration will announce a potential link between acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol, and autism. The government is expected to advise pregnant women to use the medication only for high fevers, according to sources. Acetaminophen is widely used as a pain reliever during pregnancy.

Trump previously stated he would make a major announcement on autism, calling it “totally out of control” and suggesting there may be a reason behind its rise. White House spokesperson Kush Desai described the upcoming statement as “historic progress” in addressing increasing autism rates. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has prioritized identifying the condition’s causes, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reporting that 1 in 31 American 8-year-olds was diagnosed with autism in 2022, a significant increase from 1 in 150 in 2000.

The administration is also set to highlight leucovorin, a drug used for cancer and anemia, as a potential therapy for autism. However, Kenvue Inc., the manufacturer of Tylenol, disputed the claims, stating that “independent, sound science” confirms no credible evidence links acetaminophen to autism. The company expressed concern over the implications for expecting mothers.

Kenvue’s stock dropped 5.9% in New York trading after the reports, marking a 19% decline this year. Trump is scheduled to speak later Monday, followed by a White House briefing led by press secretary Karoline Leavitt.
