Advisers to former President Donald Trump are evaluating Las Vegas as a potential host for a Republican National Convention ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, according to reports. The proposal marks a significant departure from tradition, as political conventions have historically been tied to presidential election years.
Trump first introduced the idea of a midterm convention in August, emphasizing the Republican Party’s momentum and success under his leadership. “The Republican Party is doing really well. Millions of people have joined us in our quest to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN,” he stated on Truth Social. He highlighted the party’s fundraising advantages over Democrats and its efforts to reverse policies from the Biden administration.
Sources familiar with the discussions indicate that Trump’s team has been refining plans since the concept was initially raised earlier this year. While Las Vegas is a leading contender, other locations, including Washington D.C. and Texas, are also under consideration. The city holds personal significance for Trump, who co-owns a major hotel there and became the first Republican to win Nevada in a presidential election in two decades during 2024.
If approved, the convention would represent a historic milestone for Las Vegas, which has never hosted a national party political event. Victor Joecks, a columnist with the Las Vegas Review-Journal, described the idea as “a great idea for Trump and Republicans,” noting its potential to bolster local GOP efforts.
Traditional conventions focus on nominating presidential candidates, but Trump has suggested this event would instead spotlight Republican contenders and current officeholders. No final decision has been announced, with officials continuing to assess options.
