During a press conference Thursday, President Donald Trump jokingly announced he would run for prime minister in Israel after his term ends, stating he has “99% polling” there. “I’m right now at 99% in Israel,” Trump said. He added: “I could run for prime minister. So maybe after I do this, I’ll go to Israel, run for prime minister.”
The former president also referenced Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, remarking: “He’s a wartime prime minister. I just don’t think they treat him well.” When asked about his stance on holding off U.S. strikes against Iran during ongoing ceasefire negotiations, Trump claimed Netanyahu would comply with his wishes and called the leader “a very good man.”
Trump later recycled a joke from last month about running for president of Venezuela after his presidency ends. He stated: “After I’m finished with this, I can go to Venezuela. I will quickly learn Spanish. It won’t take too long. I’m good at language, and I will go to Venezuela.”
Earlier in the week, Trump had told Latin American leaders at the inaugural Shield of the Americas Summit that he would not need to learn a new language, praising Secretary of State Marco Rubio for his fluent Spanish skills as the son of Cuban immigrants.
