President Trump has filed a lawsuit against the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) seeking $10 billion in damages, alleging defamation and violations of Florida’s Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act.
The suit, officially filed this evening in the Southern District of Florida Federal Court, accuses the BBC of deceptively editing a clip from President Trump’s January 6 speech to fit an “insurrection” narrative. According to the lawsuit, the BBC omitted Trump’s call for supporters to protest peacefully during the incident at the U.S. Capitol.
Trump’s legal team stated: “The formerly respected and now disgraced BBC defamed President Trump by intentionally, maliciously, and deceptively doctoring his speech in a brazen attempt to interfere in the 2024 Presidential Election.”
The BBC apologized to Trump on November 13 but refused to compensate him or implement meaningful changes. In their statement, the broadcaster said: “While the BBC sincerely regrets the manner in which the video clip was edited, we strongly disagree there is a basis for a defamation claim.”
President Trump had previously threatened legal action against the BBC unless it apologized and provided compensation.
