On Thursday, President Trump welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping to the White House for a meeting that turned unexpectedly humorous during an informal tour of the presidential complex. As they walked through the grounds, Trump led Xi past a display of portraits commemorating U.S. presidents.

At one point, Xi noticed Biden’s portrait had been replaced by an autopen—a device famously linked to former president Donald Trump. The moment caused Xi to break into laughter. According to video shared by a White House aide, Trump gestured toward the autopen and quipped, “Trump, and then Trump, and this is the autopen,” drawing applause from Xi and his entourage. When pressed further, Trump added, “It’s Biden.”

The meeting concluded with a state dinner where Trump emphasized their shared vision for U.S.-China relations. He stated, “President Xi and I both understand that we represent different systems but the ties between our people endure. Together we can continue to build a relationship that promotes prosperity and security for future generations.”

Behind closed doors, President Xi warned of the need to avoid the so-called “Thucydides Trap,” noting competition between nations should be healthy and not escalate into conflict. The two leaders also addressed critical international issues, including trade disputes, Taiwan, Middle Eastern affairs, and Russia’s war in Ukraine.
