The U.S. military conducted a “lethal strike” in the southern Caribbean against a drug-trafficking vessel linked to Venezuela, according to reports. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio provided details on the operation, which was announced by President Donald Trump during a press conference in the Oval Office.
Trump stated, “Over the last few minutes, [we] literally shot out a boat, a drug-carrying boat,” adding that the vessel contained “a lot of drugs” and that further information would follow. The identities of those aboard the vessel remain unknown.
The strike occurred approximately one month after Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth deployed multiple U.S. warships near Venezuela to target drug cartels. Earlier this month, the Navy confirmed plans to increase its presence off Venezuela’s coast, sending three warships as part of an anti-drug mission. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro condemned the move, calling it an “extravagant, unjustifiable, immoral and absolutely criminal and bloody threat.”
The Trump administration has previously accused Maduro’s government of collaborating with drug cartels to smuggle narcotics into the United States.
