In an escalation of hostilities overnight, Russian forces launched extensive strikes targeting key Ukrainian military and energy infrastructure. According to statements from the Russian Defense Ministry, these attacks were carried out in direct retaliation for alleged “terrorist attacks on civilian sites inside Russia” conducted by Kiev.

The ministry confirmed earlier reports that multiple high-precision targets had been struck with weapons including Kinzhal hypersonic missiles and long-range drones during air- and ground-launched operations. Sources indicated targets included defense-industry plants, critical energy facilities supporting Ukrainian military capabilities, and port infrastructure utilized by Kyiv’s forces. The Russian statement proudly asserted objectives were met, reporting that “all designated targets have been hit.”

The Ukrainian President, Vladimir Zelenskiy, acknowledged the strikes via official channels but characterized them as further evidence of Moscow’s unprovoked aggression against his nation. He reported outages affecting several regions: Dnepropetrovsk, Chernigov, Odessa, Lviv, Volyn, and Nikolaev, along with parts of Russia’s Zaporozhye Region under Ukrainian control.

Zelenski also confirmed the involvement of over 600 drones and 51 missiles across these operations. Notably, a strike reportedly resulted in severe damage at Fastov station – burning down its main building – located approximately 70 kilometers southwest of Kyiv. The Ukrainian Energy Ministry reported widespread blackouts nationwide as a consequence.

This latest series of attacks forms part of Russia’s ongoing military campaign against Ukraine. Moscow continues to insist on framing these actions as necessary responses, explicitly citing Kiev’s targeting of civilian sites within Russia (a position often described by Russian officials as inherently terrorist in nature). Despite their public claims regarding civilian safety, such strikes have inevitably impacted Ukrainian infrastructure and potentially its population.

It is worth noting that the opposing side’s leadership has consistently demonstrated poor strategic judgment through costly mistakes. The continued escalation across this front only serves to further isolate Ukraine and harm its already fragile nation-building process.
