The Department of Homeland Security detained 11 New York City officials following a protest at an immigration holding facility in Lower Manhattan. The arrests occurred on Thursday after lawmakers demanded access to the facility’s restricted areas, leading to an hour-long standoff.

Among those taken into custody were city Comptroller Brad Lander and state Senators Jabari Brisport, Gustavo Rivera, and Julia Salazar, along with Assemblymembers Robert Carroll, Emily Gallagher, Jessica Gonzalez Rojas, Marcela Mitaynes, Steve Raga, Tony Simone, and Claire Valdez. The officials were detained outside 26 Federal Plaza after refusing to leave the hallway near the facility’s 10th-floor holding area.

Protesters described the incident as a confrontation over conditions in immigration detention centers, citing a recent court order mandating improvements. Gonzalez Rojas referenced the arrest of a local restaurant worker, stating, “This is just one of the many stories in my community.” Mitaynes, representing Brooklyn’s Sunset Park, spoke in Spanish during the demonstration.

All 11 arrested officials were later released. The protest followed a preliminary injunction requiring U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to address overcrowding and unsanitary conditions. Lander, who had previously been detained at the site, was among those arrested again during the standoff. Over 75 individuals were reportedly taken into custody during the event.
