A 35-year-old staffer for Republican Rep. Tony Gonzalez of Texas died under mysterious circumstances on Saturday after being found on fire at her home. Regina Santos-Aviles, who served as U.S. Representative Tony Gonzales’s Regional District Director, was transported to a hospital but later succumbed to her injuries. Her death has left behind an eight-year-old son, according to reports.

The Uvalde Police Department and Texas Rangers are investigating the incident, which occurred after a police call to Santos-Aviles’s home on Saturday night. A press release from the Uvalde Police Department and a call sheet report obtained by the Daily Caller indicate that investigators have not determined the cause of the fire but stated there is no indication of foul play.

Santos-Aviles’s mother, Nora Ann Gonzales, described the tragedy as an accident, recounting her daughter’s final moments. She said Santos-Aviles was distraught and repeatedly expressed a desire to see her son before the incident. Nora Ann Gonzales arrived at her daughter’s home and found her outside with burns. “The last thing she said is, ‘I don’t want to die,’” she recalled, adding that emergency responders assured her they would do their best to save her.

Firefighters from the Uvalde Volunteer Fire Department responded to a call about an individual on fire at 9:39 p.m. Saturday. While the initial call was canceled, crews still arrived at the scene due to its proximity to the station. They found a fire that had been extinguished with a fire extinguisher and attended to Santos-Aviles, who was transported by helicopter to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio.

Police Chief Homer E. Delgado emphasized that there is no evidence of foul play but noted that all unattended deaths are investigated as part of standard procedure. “In times of loss, our greatest duty is to stand together, support one another, and honor the memory of those we have lost,” he stated.

Rep. Tony Gonzalez released a statement mourning Santos-Aviles’s death, praising her dedication to her community. “Regina devoted her profession toward making a difference in her community. She will always be remembered for her passion toward Uvalde and helping the community become a better place,” he said.
