The Pittsburgh Steelers confirmed backup quarterback Skylar Thompson was robbed during a mugging incident Friday night in Dublin ahead of the team’s game against the Minnesota Vikings in the Irish capital. Thompson sustained minor injuries in the attack, which occurred as the squad prepared for Sunday’s matchup—the NFL’s first regular season game in Ireland.

Thompson, 28, had already been placed on injured reserve after a hamstring injury sustained on Sept. 10. A Steelers spokesman stated, “We are aware of a situation involving Skylar Thompson on Friday night in Dublin,” adding the team was collaborating with NFL security to investigate. The statement provided no further details.

A Kansas State graduate, Thompson has played 10 games over three seasons in the NFL, all with the Dolphins. He started a 2022 playoff game for Miami, throwing for 220 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions in a loss at Buffalo.

The Steelers and Vikings are set to face off Sunday morning in Dublin as part of the league’s expanded international schedule. The Irish Independent reported Thompson had been assaulted and robbed in the city.

Thompson was able to celebrate Pittsburgh’s Week 1 victory over the New York Jets alongside his teammates in Dublin, offering a small silver lining amid the incident. Signing with the Steelers in January on a Reserve/Future contract, Thompson earned his roster spot through strong preseason performances before being placed on injured reserve following the Jets game.
