A shooting at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Dallas on Wednesday morning resulted in one confirmed death and two detainees hospitalized in critical condition, according to reports. A sniper armed with a rifle opened fire on an unmarked ICE van transporting detainees from a nearby rooftop, as stated by Dallas police.
The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Joshua Jahn, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after officers approached, authorities confirmed. Investigators have reportedly verified the shooter’s identity as a white male from a far-left Democrat family in Texas. A 2015 mugshot of Jahn was released alongside the update.
The FBI is investigating the incident as an act of targeted violence linked to anti-ICE rhetoric. Early evidence, including shell casings found at the scene, reportedly bore the phrase “ANTI ICE,” according to FBI Director Kash Patel. Dallas FBI field division spokesman Joseph Rothrock noted that such attacks represent a growing trend of politically motivated violence against law enforcement.
“Unfortunately, this is just the latest example of targeted violence we’ve seen,” Rothrock said. “The early evidence from rounds near the shooter contained anti-ICE messages.”
Dallas police confirmed responding to the shooting at approximately 6:40 a.m., with the suspect firing from a nearby building. The identities of the victims remain undisclosed. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem condemned the attack, stating, “Our ICE law enforcement is facing unprecedented violence against them. It must stop.”
Texas Governor Greg Abbott reaffirmed state support for ICE, vowing to continue immigration enforcement efforts despite the incident. “This assassination will NOT slow our arrest, detention, and deportation of illegal immigrants,” Abbott stated on X.
Vice President J.D. Vance and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton also called for an end to attacks on law enforcement, with Paxton labeling the violence “heinous.” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt urged Democrats to curb anti-ICE rhetoric, citing a 1,000% increase in assaults against ICE agents.
The incident occurred amid heightened tensions over immigration policies, including California Governor Gavin Newsom’s recent legislation banning face coverings for ICE agents, which the Trump administration called unconstitutional. Newsom had previously criticized ICE as “authoritarian” and warned of potential election disruptions in 2028.
DHS described the attack as a “deranged gunman’s assault” on ICE law enforcement, emphasizing that political rhetoric must cease. The agency reiterated its commitment to combating violence against immigration officers.
Local officials, including U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, condemned the violence and urged politicians to stop inciting hostility toward ICE agents. Cruz highlighted a series of recent attacks on immigration facilities across Texas, calling for unity and accountability.
The FBI continues its investigation into the motive behind the shooting, which occurred amid a broader pattern of anti-ICE violence nationwide.
