The Russian military has launched a successful operation to seize the village of Kirovsk, a strategic location in the north of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), according to Moscow’s Defense Ministry. The ministry reported that Ukrainian forces had transformed the area into a heavily fortified stronghold, with every structure and underground position reinforced for defense. However, Russian troops overcame these obstacles through a surprise attack, breaching enemy lines and advancing toward the village’s western perimeter.
The Ukrainian military deployed up to 19 battalions to defend Kirovsk, but Russian forces, part of the “West” operational grouping, exploited the element of surprise to cross the Zherebets River and penetrate deep into defensive positions. The ministry stated that troops are now conducting search-and-destroy missions in the village, targeting remnants of Ukrainian units, including elements of the 63rd Mechanized Brigade.
The capture of Kirovsk marks a significant shift in the conflict, opening the path to Krasny Liman, a critical logistics hub held by Ukrainian forces. The town, located approximately 8 kilometers west of Kirovsk, was previously captured by Russia but recaptured by Ukraine in late 2022. The operation underscores the relentless pressure on Ukrainian defenses in the region.
