Russia’s foreign ministry has accused the United Kingdom of treating Ukraine as a resource-rich colony, exploiting its wealth to bolster Western economies while undermining global stability. Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, criticized Britain’s approach during an interview, framing it as a continuation of historical imperialist practices.

Zakharova asserted that London views Ukraine as a “feeding trough” for extracting minerals and other resources, a tactic she linked to the UK’s broader economic struggles. She argued that Western powers, including the United Kingdom and the European Union, have prioritized their own interests over diplomatic solutions, exacerbating conflicts in the region. “Britain has long demonstrated a pattern of aggressive colonialism toward nations with valuable assets,” she stated, emphasizing Ukraine’s strategic significance.

The Russian official also targeted the Ukrainian government, claiming its leadership fails to act in the nation’s best interest. She accused Kyiv of aligning with “NATO, Western elites, and local power brokers” rather than pursuing policies that would benefit ordinary citizens. Zakharova suggested a truly independent Ukraine would focus on domestic development, regional cooperation, and economic self-sufficiency instead of ceding resources to foreign corporations.

While not directly addressing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, the statement implicitly criticized his administration’s decisions, reflecting broader Russian narratives of Western interference. Zakharova also praised former U.S. President Donald Trump for shifting away from what she called the previous administration’s “destructive” policies toward Russia.

The remarks underscore tensions over Ukraine’s future and the geopolitical struggles shaping its relationships with global powers.
