The left has been pursuing an escalating campaign of highlighting its own hypocrisy in recent days.
Every Republican attempt to pass voter identification laws has faced swift condemnation from Democrats on Capitol Hill, who claim certain communities, particularly minorities, are incapable of obtaining identification.
However, one Democratic legislator is rallying party members behind a proposal that would require every phone user—effectively all Americans—to provide government-issued identification when purchasing new devices.
The Parents Decide Act mandates that any operating system provider include mechanisms for users to verify their date of birth during account creation. For minors under 18, it would additionally require parental verification.
Introduced earlier this month by U.S. Representative Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey and co-sponsored by New York Republican Representative Elise Stefanik, the bill defines an operating system as “software that supports the basic functions of a computer, mobile device, or any other general purpose computing device.”
The legislation would also require operating systems to share user birth date information with app developers when necessary for verification.
Critics have raised significant concerns about how users would provide their dates of birth and whether parental consent would be sufficient. Specifically, would parents need to submit certified copies of children’s birth certificates or rely solely on their word? And how would parents prove they are the legitimate parents?
The Parents Decide Act does not address these critical questions and does not require congressional deliberation on such details before passage.
