On Sunday, President Trump officially turned 80 years old, but his birthday celebration took an unexpected turn when German Chancellor Friedrich Merz presented him with a custom soccer jersey bearing the president’s name and number 47.

The gift—a version of the German national team’s jersey—was shared by Merz on social media as part of efforts to “win over” President Trump and project unity between Germany and the United States. In one photo, Trump raised the jersey and smiled for a picture before setting it aside. Chancellor Merz noted: “After all, we’re on the same team.”

The gesture follows Merz’s history of crafting gifts tailored to gain Trump’s approval. Last year, he presented the president with a golf club and a gold-framed copy of Trump’s paternal grandfather’s birth certificate—a document reflecting the grandfather’s upbringing in western Germany before emigrating to the United States.

The exchange occurred during a meeting co-hosted by the United States alongside Mexico and Canada for the World Cup, where Prime Minister Mark Carney was also present. Earlier that day, French President Emmanuel Macron had gifted all seven G7 leaders personalized bicycles to promote the Cycling World Championships scheduled for next year in the French Alps.

Merz’s latest gift came after recent diplomatic tensions between the two leaders over Iran policy.
