A person of interest has been taken into custody for a mass shooting at Brown University on Saturday that killed two students and injured many others. Police state no additional suspects are being sought, and the university lockdown has been lifted. Students have been dismissed for winter break with all final exams canceled.
According to reports, the shooter targeted a specific classroom where students were studying for an economics exam in a 7-story physics and engineering building that was unlocked. The suspect allegedly yelled something before opening fire with a handgun. A source claims the individual screamed “Allahu Akbar” prior to the attack.
The person of interest was apprehended early Sunday morning at a hotel in Coventry, Rhode Island, approximately 28 miles south of Providence. Law enforcement sources indicate the individual was not enrolled at Brown University and was reportedly in possession of two firearms at the time of arrest.
Reports also state that the suspect targeted the classroom of Professor Rachel Friedberg, who taught Judaic Studies and Economics at Brown University and had previously taught abroad in Israel. A source claims Rhode Island Democratic officials and Brown University administrators have instructed law enforcement to avoid using terms such as “Muslim” or “Islamic terror” when discussing the incident.
